Disposition-Reaction Roll
After my previous post I did a bit of reading, and came across Dice Goblin's Two-Tiered Reaction Roll. This basically solved my uncertainty around how I would want to handle social situations in my socially-forward GMing style. As a mathematician though, I thought I'd do a little finagling to make it take up less of my mental stack while playing:
Start with the initial disposition:
- Antagonistic (Intolerant, undermines party)
- Conflicting (Disagreeable, opposed to parlay)
- Neutral (Uncertain, needs further prompting)
- Compatible (Agreeable, observes social norms)
- Aligned (Indulgent, looking to parlay)
When negotiations are attempted, roll 2d6 reaction roll modifies their disposition as follows:
- 2: worsens 2 steps
- 3-5: worsens 1 step
- 6-8: stays the same
- 9-11: improves 1 step
- 12: improves 2 steps
Consult the players for boosts and burdens to their favourability, assigning +/-1 respectively to each instance. This allows for stacking modifiers, which should provide a point of reflection to their attitudes and actions leading up to this point.
This is mathematically equivalent to Dice Goblin's Two-Tiered Reaction Roll, but without as much arithmetic (subtraction in particular). If the reaction is uncertain, then I think the NPC should make a morale check to break-off and defer responsibility (possibly to a superior, in alignment with the original mechanic).
